The year went by quicker than any other I can remember! GB Leighton played a lot all over the place, but the show that really sticks out for me was the one we did at the The Hook and Ladder Theater & Lounge on December 13. Playing live is always about the unknown. You don’t know what it’s gonna be like until you’re in the middle of it. I like the element of chance. Our fans surprised us by making the show a sold out success! Michelle made it special by making sure there was free cool stuff for the people who bought advance tickets. For a moment or two, I felt like the music was playing itself and I was just along for the ride. I live for moments like that. Thank you! We also survived The Eelpout Festival in Leech Lake. Lesser people may have died from exposure, but I guess we are made of stronger stuff!

We also released the new album, 2nd Chance! Thanks to Michelle for organizing the whole thing! Many of the songs have become fan favorites and staples in our set lists. Brian brought me top shelf songs to produce, making my job a pleasure. Big thanks to all the fans who stepped up and contributed, meeting our fundraising goal in just over 24 hours! We are working on a new batch of songs right now that we hope to share with you sooner than later!

2019 was also a year of worry. Worry about the future of the country we reside in. Worry about the country I was born in. Worry about our ability to see things clearly. Worry that some of us have grown into believing that facts are no longer facts. That facts are just opinions among many others. Worry that we are getting used to something that was unthinkable just a few years ago. Worry that we’ve forgotten that we were all immigrants at one point, just wanting to make a better life for our families. Why would we want a president that we wouldn’t be want as a neighbor, boss or coworker? The way the GOP is standing by him is no mystery. They are getting ready for something and it has nothing to do with anything that resembles democracy. 2020 will be a very important year for all of us.

As a family, Michelle, Elliott and I had a year that brought a lot of media attention. Elliott had the opportunity to go to New York and Los Angeles because of it, and KARE 11 and The Star Tribune ran stories on our unique situation. At 11 years old, Elliott started attending the U of M as a junior and he loves it there. Some well meaning people worry about him missing out on his childhood, but he also has a life outside of school that is very much that of an 11 year old boy!

He reminds me so much of my dad; Brilliant, curious and very kind. He lets Michelle and I know what he’s interested in and we do our best to accommodate him. We are very lucky to have some flexibility in our work to make that possible!

I love what I do for a living, but it can be hard work. Without the support of family, it would be all but impossible to pull off. A lot of you know Michelle really well by now! She makes it all happen. She has worked in just about any capacity for GB Leighton and just started running sound a bit outside of the GB orbit! She’s a master at getting things done while Elliott and I often end up with our heads in the clouds. I love you, Sweetest!

Lisbeth Andersson at Sharkfin Sweden AB picks makes sure that I always have the best. Had somebody told me when I was a kid that one day I’d be endorsed by them, I think I would have fainted! I keep running into other guitar players out there and more often than not they are blown away by the durability and versatility of Sharkfins. I’ve used them for 42 years and anything else is just not gonna cut it. Come talk to me after any show and I’ll be happy to show you how great they are!

Electro-Voice/ Michael Doucot is a local Minnesota company and I always bring their powered speakers along for the many acoustic shows I do every year. They are clear, powerful and durable. Thank you for your continued support!

Jeri Hart makes me look good at every show with the custom guitar straps she makes for me. Each one a work of art. I like to say that if you can dream it, Jeri can make it!

What good is a guitar without quality strings on it? Ernie Ball makes the best there is. I go through hundreds of sets a year and they never let me down. They also make my favorite volume and delay pedals (the VP JR and the Ambient Delay) and they’ll never leave my pedalboard!

I also had the pleasure of recording some incredible artists here at Studio Bredsound. I recorded Ali Gray's second Christmas album in April and we borrowed Elliott’s fake Christmas tree for the studio to set the mood! It worked! Another highlight was the ongoing recording with ChrisTina Schlieske. After 34 years we are still exploring and finding new ways to write, play and record.

I hope that 2020 will be a good year for you, your loved ones and for this great country we call home! Happy new year!

Patrik

It went by in a flash. I look through my calendar and I can see that GB Leighton played a lot, all over the place. Everywhere we went we met wonderful people who made us feel welcome. Scott Wenum departed, but we got Ryan Inselman back and the feeling in the band is really great. We all seem to be on the same page, pulling in the same direction. To be in a band that’s firing on all cylinders feels wonderful.

2018 was certainly the year where we finally finished the new GB Leighton album “2nd Chance”! It’s been a long time coming, but I feel that it’s really special. Brian wrote all the songs on it by himself and it’s his most personal collection of songs to date. I’m very proud of him. Brian and I produced the album together and didn’t let it go until he felt that all the songs were saying all they had to say.

Releasing new music can be a challenge for anyone these days, but thanks to our fans, the new album will see the light of day! My wife Michelle mounted a very ambitious Kickstarter campaign, and we met our target in twenty-four hours! GB Leighton fans are in a league of their own, and I’m blown away by their dedication and love for the band. I’ve never seen anything like it. Thank you!

Some people think that putting new strings on a guitar is a pain in the ass, but I’m not one of them. It gives me time to think about what I do for a living. I’m a lucky guy! Ernie Ball strings has been there for me for the last several years, providing me with the best strings, guitar care products, volume pedals and more. If it’s good enough for Keith Richards, it’s certainly good enough for me!

Sharkfin Sweden AB picks in Sweden are kind enough to send me the best picks in the world. I keep handing them out to other guitar players on the road. Once you’ve tried them, there is no going back. They are three picks in one, and if you switch between picking and finger picking during the same song, they’re invaluable. Thank you, Sharkfin!

Do you know Jeri Hart? She is the amazing artist that makes my guitar straps. Peerless quality and designs that are as intricate as you can imagine. I’ve said it before: If you can dream it, Jeri Hart can make it!

Looking to the future, I have a really good feeling about the New Year. It’s in the air! Politically, 2018 had a darkness to it that weighed heavily on many of us. Who are we as a people? At one point or another, we all came here because where we came from was no longer enough. We came to escape potato famines and oppressive kings and queens. In my case, I just wanted to live in the birthplace of jazz, blues, country, bluegrass and rock & roll. Singing in English in Sweden in the mid eighties was a nonstarter, so I left. It was well worth it to give up financial stability, five weeks of vacation per year and a pension. I don’t think anyone moves to America to bleed the system dry. My first job in America was working the graveyard shift at a gas station Monday through Friday. It was a job that no one wanted, but I did. I have never been between jobs since. I guess the only question that really matters is; Are we, or are we not our brother’s keeper? Do we, or do we not have a collective responsibility toward one another? Should we, or should we not empathize with people who literally have nothing?

I don’t think that the threat to our way of life and standard of living is coming from South America. It’s coming from politicians who take money from enormous corporate entities where the main objective is to maintain a status quo. Real change will not be possible as long as pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, seed and pesticide companies control Washington. Their only objective is to control the poison as well as the cure, and they will spend whatever it takes to do so. This is not a time to squabble amongst ourselves. This is the time to hold our representatives in Washington accountable. The corruption is hiding in plain sight.

In my personal life, I’ve been blessed. When I was younger, there was no sacrifice too big to get me to where I was going in music. I put it all on the altar of rock & roll. I had it in my mind that the only way I was going to achieve any degree of happiness was if I reached the toppermost of the poppermost. It took me many years to get out of my own way. I hurt some people along the way, and I deeply regret it. God didn’t give up on me. I got another chance at having a family; the only thing that really matters. Michelle and I have been together for almost twenty-one years. Ten years ago our son Elliott was born. These have been the best years of my life, and I thank God every night for giving me another chance. I love playing rock & roll in front of people, but the best part is knowing that I get to go home after the show. Home to my family. Thank you, Michelle and Elliott.

If you are reading this, I wish you all the happiness in the year ahead. If we work together, are kind to one another and realize that deep down, we are all the same, everything will work out. That’s why we are here.

Much love,

Patrik

A huge thanks to Norma Cisneros of El Cid for making our stay so amazing. We had over 100 fans fly Sun Country Airlines with us. We had a meet and greet sunset cruise, played three amazing shows, and got to spend lots of time with you in the sun. We also were able to do something truly special, to give back to the Mazatlan community. We were put in touch with a girls orphanage and boys orphanage to see how we could help. We put out a list of items to those heading down with us and within 24 hours all of it and more was being donated and brought down from our fans and band members. Not only that, we had over $1200 in donations from our amazing fans that Brian was able to present to the orphanage. We are beyond blown away by the love and generosity our GB Leighton family. Thank you for making this trip so amazing and memorable.

Should we do it in 2019 too?! Drop us a message and let us know if you would be interested!

It’s been three years now since I joined GB Leighton. We took our fans with us to Mexico and played all over the Midwest to great crowds. I’ve probably said this before, but the fans of GB Leighton are special. It’s a very large extended family where we know quite a bit about each other. It’s a community where we share in all that life can be. It makes us stronger.

We got stuck in a hailstorm while playing on a barge on the Mississippi river and got pooped on by birds in Wayzata, MN, but as a general rule, the band plays on!

It takes a real team effort to keep us going from one show to the rest and I can’t think highly enough of the guys I get to play with. At the end of the day, it’s all about the songs. We play a lot of shows, and if Brian’s songs weren’t as strong as they are, it would probably get old really quick. I’m lucky to be in a place where I get to play them and do my part to get them across every night. It’s a gift. Thank you, Brian!

I’ve had some amazing people come through Studio Bredsound this year. My collaboration with Tina Schlieske has been really special. We’ve been making music together off and on since 1984 and we can still come up with new ways of doing things. Brian has been busy writing and recording here too and it shouldn’t be long before have something new for the fans to hear! His new songs are some of my very favorite ones of his.

As a musician and producer, 2017 has been a great year, and I am grateful to all the people that make it happen for me. I really don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t get my Sharkfin picks. I’ve used them for 40 years now and I try to turn other guitar players on to them wherever I go. Thank you for sending them to me all the way from Sweden! Check out their website http://www.sharkfin.eu/ and this this video I made on how I use them!

I remember seeing their ads when I was just a kid and how cool they were. It’s a blessing to be part of the Ernie Ball family. They also make the coolest delay pedal on the market; The Ambient Delay.
Being born and raised in Sweden, I’ve taken a keen interest in American politics since I was nine years old, watching Richard Nixon get on that chopper, wave goodbye and leave the White House forever in disgrace. It was surreal, and 2017 was that times a thousand. I believe that if you take on the mantle of being the leader of the free world, you have an awesome responsibility. You have to lead by example. On the international stage, I think we can do much better than we did in the past year. As a country, we are squarely in the mix internationally and I believe our survival depends on us realizing that. Making America an island is not the way forward. Closer to home, I think that over the years, perhaps we have come to believe that democracy is some kind of perennial flower that takes care of itself without being tended to. Some very dark political forces have taken advantage of that kind of thinking and they are working to dismantle it. Pitting people against each other and speaking of “alternative facts” is proof of that. Now is the time to speak out against it. They are banking on our collective silence to see their agenda through. After having lived in America for 32 years, I still love this country with all my heart, but I think we can do better. Let’s make 2018 a year of positive change!

As a person, I feel like the luckiest man alive. I get to be a husband and a father and I know that these are the best years of my life. I’m old enough to not take that for granted.

Family means everything to me. When I first met Michelle I saw that she was beautiful, but also that she was compassionate and kind. From the very beginning she became an integral part of the many things I do as a musician. She has designed album covers, booked and promoted shows, lined up accommodations and lifted tons of road cases. If you are reading this on www.patriktanner.com you can see her beautiful photography and website design as well. She has an ability to reinvent herself that simply amazes me.

We knew early on that Elliott was gifted and that he wouldn’t get what he needed in a regular school setting. Michelle spent countless hours researching our best options for his schooling and continues to drive him to and from Normandale College four days a week. Thank you for all you do for us. I love you!

Elliott will be ten in August and I want to hold on to every moment. Time goes by way too quickly. Jag älskar dej, min fina pojke!

The passing of David Bowie felt like a death in the family. He was like a cool uncle that you saw maybe once a year, but each time, he left you feeling that it was ok to be different. That being different was cool. I owe him so much.

And then there was Prince...

Just this month, I lost one of my own: Thomas Johansson played bass in Picnic Boys; the first band I fronted. There were others as well. Too many.

I've played with GB Leighton for two years now. Over time, the meaning of the songs have really sunk in. Hope, loss, redemption, love, lust...forgiveness. What it means to be a person. If I had a shitty day with a gig to play that night, many of these songs would lift me up, the same way they would lift up the people in the crowd. A gift. Thanks, Brian.

None of my rocking & rolling, recording and producing would happen without the support of my family. If you've been to a GB show, you've probably met my wife, Michelle! She's been making it all happen for almost 19 years now.

Chances are you met my son, Elliott too! I know how lucky I am. I take none of it for granted. My family means everything to me. At the end of every day I thank God that I've been trusted to be a husband and a father.

I’m fourteen years old, my ears are ringing, and my life has finally begun. Every thing that I have done in my young life has led up to this moment. So how did I get here?

A few months earlier I had just started 8th grade at Åkersvik Högstadium in my hometown of Sundsvall, Sweden. This school year promised to be very much like the previous seven. At home my parents fought with a bitter determination that defied all logic. School was a place I went to five days a week, seemingly only to get bullied and beaten up.

At what point do you finally admit defeat?

I had had plenty of time getting used to the idea that some people were meant to be happy while others were meant to be sad. It was simply my lot in life. Something to live with and to get used to. It was my normal.

After school, I would go home, put on my headphones and listen to records. The Sweet and Kiss had been my idols, but that all changed once I discovered punk rock. The Sex Pistols, The Clash, and The Damned lead me down a crooked path to The Velvet Underground and The Stooges.

I vividly remember buying two LP’s on the same day when I was thirteen: Status Quo’s “Rockin’ All Over the World” and Elvis Costello’s “This Year’s Model”. Status Quo, as the band name implied, was a safe bet: Reliable boogie rock. Elvis Costello I had only recently read about. After just one listen, I grabbed that Status Quo LP along with all of my Sweet and Kiss records and put them in a closet where I wouldn’t have to look at them anymore. In my mind, I had moved on, but there was no one there to notice.

Indeed, 8th grade was more of the same. I would daydream myself through all the classes I couldn’t get my head around. Chemistry, biology, physics and math. My mom and dad had every right to be worried about my lack of progress. My lack of friends.

Then, one day, this tall blonde kid comes up to me during recess. He was about to take a chemistry test, and could I help him prep for it by rattling off some questions? I had seen him around the hallways of school before. I knew he was in a band. A punk rock band. He was in the next grade up and in my eyes, he was impossibly cool. He was also impossibly friendly. I was not used to that. We talked for a bit and I told him I played the drums. “Really? There is a band that I have been filling in with that’s looking for a drummer. They are called Massmedia. Have you heard of them?”

I had.

The tall cool blonde kid gave me the phone number to Torulf, the guitar player in Massmedia, and urged me to call him. My mind was reeling. My future happiness was hanging in the balance.

When I got home that day, I took the piece of paper with the phone number on it and locked myself into my dad’s office in the basement. I carefully planned, word for word, what I would say if Torulf actually picked up the phone.

He did, and the conversation must have gone well enough because we made plans to meet at the bus station downtown the next day. “How do I know it’s you?” I asked. “Just look for someone with really short black hair.” he said.

The next day I left for our meeting way too early and with time to spare, I went record shopping. I bought a 45 with the band 999. Back at the bus station, Torulf was hard to miss. Black hair, black jeans, several years older than me and very, very cool.

“What’s in the bag?” He asked. I showed him the 45 hoping that this would somehow establish my punk rock credibility.

“That’s not the original pressing” he said.

Oh shit.

We took the bus to his parent’s house where he showed me what had to have been hundreds of punk rock 45’s and LP’s. He compiled a stack of them, wrote down the number of records on a piece of paper and told me to go home and listen, absorb and learn. I did.

A short time later, I formally auditioned for the band. I was in! Many rehearsals were scheduled for the following weeks. There was a gig on the books:
November 10, 1979.

Magasinet was a nonprofit rock club that had recently been adopted as home base for the growing number of punk rock bands in town. I don’t think we played for longer than 30 minutes. It was loud, sweaty and when we ran out of songs, we simply repeated some that we had already played. The adrenalin rush I felt was nothing I had ever experienced. All my anger and frustration came out. I had spent the last seven years in hell and I was done feeling like shit.

I had finally been set free.

Standing at the bus stop after the show, I make plans to cut and dye my hair. The old Patrik Tanner is no more. I fully realize that I have been dead inside for seven long years. I feel as if a clock has started ticking inside of me. That life is gonna be worth living.

I may have been born at Sabbatsberg Hospital in Stockholm, but my life began at fourteen in a tiny, sweaty rock club called Magasinet in Sundsvall.

The review was glowing and inspired me to write a song. It took only minutes as I abandoned the idea of making the words rhyme. It's about how lonely it can be growing up. Bowie made things a bit easier for all of us who were different. He told us we were beautiful. This is my thank you note to him.

So many changes and all of them for the better!

When Brian called and asked me if I'd like to join GB Leighton as lead guitar player and band director, the time was right. I had worked with Brian in the studio before so I knew him from that. I have rarely met a person with so much integrity and heart. He takes care of his band and he takes care of his fans. In many ways he's become something like the brother I never had. To be able to play his songs night after night on stage has been a gift. Thank you, Brian.

2015 also saw the release of my first solo album in Swedish! På Svenska started without me thinking that it would become a record, but with the encouragement from my wife and my good friend Peter Jonsson, the songs came quickly. With the help from Ali Gray and Mark Juenemann, I played a sold out show at the American Swedish Institute. In October I got the opportunity to go back to Sweden to play a couple of shows and make a video to support the album. Many thanks to Robert Höglund, Ollie Olson, and Niklas Palmklint for making the whole thing come together. I got to see some people I last saw some 30 years ago!

Being a working musician, you count on the things that will help you get the job done. I have used Sharkfin Sweden AB picks for almost 40 years and getting a sponsorship from them was nothing short of monumental. Their picks are second to none and are a big part of my sound and how I play. Jeri Designs Guitar Straps has been making my guitar straps for ten years now. If you can dream it, Jeri can make it. Thank you for making me look good! I averaged about 20 shows a month this past summer and I could always count on Ernie Ball to keep me in fresh strings and accessories. Good enough for Keith Richards and certainly good enough for me!

As great as 2015 was, none of it would matter if it wasn't for my family. Michelle, Elliott and I make everything a family affair and having their love and support means more than I can say. The babysitting services of Dave and Cynthia, my mother and father in law, saved us on more than one occasion this year! Me and Michelle started as a love affair on the road and remains so to this day. When I see her and Elliott out in the crowd when I'm playing I realize how incredibly lucky I am. Your love is everything. I have seen my share of twists and turns in the music business and having a family that supports you is the most important thing there is. Thank you.

Finally, to all the people that came out to the shows this past year, a big thank you. I hope to see you all again down the road in 2016!

jävlar i mig

Or perhaps you will end up playing to 19 people at the Copper Penny Cantina in Dubuque, Iowa. There is no great way to get to Dubuque from Minneapolis, Minnesota. It’s not a straight shot. No, you will have plenty of awkward twists and turns, lots of time to let your mind wander. “Maybe it’s NOT too late to go to college. Perhaps there is still a job waiting for me at Fantastic Futons. I bet I could make manager in a year if I put my mind to it.” At times like that, it’s best to be amongst friends. If there would have been an asshole drummer along on those trips, it might push you over the edge and give up Show Business forever.

If that is true, then I had surely been blessed. The drummer in the The Bullies was not only talented, but had a terrific sense of humor as well! Actually, the whole band was gifted and funny as hell. Good songs too.

The late ‘90’s! Grunge was over, and since that had gone so well, the next musical revolution was surely just around the corner. In the meantime, The Copper Penny Cantina seemed like a perfect place to spend time awaiting the Good News of the new millennium. I kept reminding myself that it’s not all about instant gratification. Winning America over, one bar at a time almost appeared as possibly the most noble of pursuits. Bringing the music to the people!

The CPC actually had quite a few things going for it. The band ate and drank for free, and if you really felt brave, you could crash in an “apartment” upstairs from the bar. The bar had a tiny stage with an awkward kind of fence in front of it. I don’t think there was ever any stage diving going on at the CPC, so it was most likely there as some kind of ill advised western decoration. I seem to recall an abundance of wagon wheel planters as well. The van ride down from Minneapolis had been blessedly incident free. No blown tires, no speeding tickets. That huge crack in the windshield had not spread an inch in over a year! That’s gotta be some kind of record! Yeah, I got precious little to whine about. We arrive on time, get the gear out of the van and the following words were uttered by one half of the rhythm section:

“Has anybody seen my bass guitar?

A thorough search was executed, and did not yield the results we had been hoping for. The bass is question was a natural1975 Fender Jazz bass with a maple neck with beautiful pearloid inlays. I had helped Mr. Bassman myself to find this wonderful piece that was in mint condition.

Activate Plan B: Find someone in Dubuque, Iowa that owns a bass guitar. These days we would have all reached for our iPhones, but in 1998…well…You just start asking people. How hard could it be? The closest we got was finding someone with a super cool Rickenbacker 4001. Sadly, for us, it had not one string on it.

At this point there is nothing to do but make the best of it. No iPhones…No Black Keys, No White Stripes, no Red Pens. Kids: Remember: This is long before it’s da shit to not have a bass player in your band. This is the time to plug a Les Paul into the bass rig, turn off all the treble and avoid hitting the top two strings.
The sum total of this experience was that you have not really lived until you have heard “Peaceful Easy feeling” performed by four guitar players and a drummer.

On the van drive back to Minneapolis the next morning I am still fuming. “How does one forget to bring the bass?” I think to myself. I was certainly prepared. I brought TWO guitars! Back in Minneapolis, it’s time to unload the van, and something is seriously amiss.

WHERE ON GOD’S GREEN EARTH IS MY 1978 MAUI BLUE FENDER TELECASTER?

At The Copper Penny Cantina, of course. The shame! The irony! The humiliation!

I eventually get the guitar back from another Minneapolis band that had the heart to bring it back to me after their stint at the Copper Penny Cantina in Dubuque, Iowa. It was completely covered in sheets of Jägermeister. I’m sure it had a great time.

Today, it’s Friday. Tomorrow morning I will be making the trip to Fairmont, Minnesota to play an entirely different repertoire, but with almost the same lineup as in The Bullies. Having said that, this is a much more sophisticated affair, I assure you! We will be covering the songs of one of America’s most beloved duos from the 60’s. Accordingly, we are appearing at an opera house (!) with nice cushy seats and a wine bar in the lobby.
Just today, I spent $900 for new brakes in the Volvo station wagon. There is only a tiny chip in my windshield, but that ain’t gonna go anywhere, ever.
So, what’s the problem?

For the past two years, the bass player (who still enjoys traveling to gigs without a spare bass) has been getting away with playing an instrument that is a ticking time bomb of willful negligent disrepair. I think he might be enjoying this. Perhaps it’s some kind of cruel mental experiment that is designed to drive me insane, never to return to Show Business.

Anticipating my own shortcomings, my wife recently gave me a box of nuclear waste green nametags for every piece of equipment I own. I suppose I wanna remain in Show Business for a little bit longer. I’ll let you know how that turns out…
Patrik Tannertag:patriktanner.com,2005:Post/35150292011-03-01T15:45:00-06:002015-02-08T17:32:26-06:00Gretsch Guitars and the Element of ChanceI was 17 years old when I first got the notion that I needed a Gretsch guitar. This would have been 1982, and I had seen a picture of one in a British pop rag about a best-forgotten band called Haircut 100. I also had it in my mind that Gang of Four used hollow body Gretsch’s to get that cool feedback sound that’s all over “Solid Gold”. What did I know?

With this dubious information, I began calling guitar stores in Stockholm, asking for Gretsch hollow bodies. Bingo! Halkan’s Rockhouse had what was described as a 1964 Gretsch Country Gentleman in near mint condition with original case for 5800.00 Swedish Crowns. ($895.00) Armed with cash from my summer job at the graveyard mowing lawns I got on the train on a Saturday morning. Come Saturday evening, I was on the train back from Stockholm, guitar in hand, happy as can be.
About a year later, I thought that I had exorcised all my feedback demons, and the Country Gent was relegated to photo opportunities only. I had developed a short lived, ill-advised fascination with Fender Jazzmasters, largely because Elvis Costello was wearing one on the cover of his debut album. Ah, youth!

Fast forward to December 1988. I had made the Big Move from Sweden to America three years prior, and I was living in a tiny, drafty apartment in a sketchy neighborhood off of East Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis. I was about to become a member of “THE GRETSCH CLUB”. To become a member of “THE GRETSCH CLUB”, you don’t need to own a Gretsch. You only need to have SOLD a Gretsch. You also need a sob story about why you no longer HAVE a Gretsch. Yep: I sold my Gretsch Country Gent for rent money: The oldest, most tired of stories, known by many musicians and their suffering significant others. Oh well. Who needs a Gretsch anyway? I was 23 years old and NOSTALGIA had not yet tapped me on the shoulder. The thing never stayed in tune anyway! Fast forward again, this time to 2001. Hollywood had eaten me up and spat me out. The signed band that I had played with had been met with less than stellar sales. Back in Minneapolis, I was 36 years old, and had started to get misty eyed about the past. What happened to that old Gretsch that I sold? Who owned it now? Certainly somebody far less deserving than me!

And so, the game was back on. I found a dealer in Canada with a 1969 Gretsch Country Gent with water damage and many non-original parts. No matter. All was forgiven. I had a Gretsch again!

It’s 2011 and I have a total of nine Gretsch guitars and basses. They are quirky, beautiful, impractical, old fashioned, mostly large, and pretty much the only guitar I play live. To re-string a Gretsch is kind of like folding a parachute: You probably wanna do it yourself. It is as if it’s saying: “Am I gonna stay in tune? Are you gonna make me?”
PRS makes excellent guitars, made of the finest materials. Stellar workmanship. I will never own one. I have a Gretsch bass where the “G” on the tailpiece in stamped out backwards. The binding on my second 1964 Gent is rotting and crumbling. They all hate Minnesota winters, act up in the summer and are generally demanding and unpredictable. So why do I keep them? Why do I use them?

“THE ELEMENT OF CHANCE”. THAT’S WHY.

I am sitting in my studio. I have a computer and a bunch of software to make just about anything play in time and in tune. Very nice. Very helpful, but…
The best rock and roll is about barely contained chaos. It’s about the notion that the whole thing could fall apart at any moment. It’s about tension. It’s about danger. It’s about an unforgettable Johnny Thunders live in Sundsvall, Sweden in the early 80’s. It’s about old Gretsch guitars.

…These days, Halkan’s Rockhouse is on the web. I just checked out their site and lo and behold; they have a 1964 Gretsch Country Gentleman for sale with no issues and original case! “How much” you ask? 49.000. SKR, or $7,643.00.
Some people say you can’t buy happiness. They clearly don’t know about Gretsch guitars!

Patrik Tannertag:patriktanner.com,2005:Post/35165472010-12-01T08:40:00-06:002017-01-16T10:00:27-06:00Nöjesguiden Reviews AllsortsPatrik Tannertag:patriktanner.com,2005:Post/35165812010-02-01T09:20:00-06:002020-10-31T06:52:35-05:00Done Broke Down Review in PulsePatrik Tannertag:patriktanner.com,2005:Post/35165662010-02-01T09:15:00-06:002017-01-16T10:00:27-06:00Sparks Would Fly Review in PulsePatrik Tanner
